Coaching and therapy serve distinctly different purposes, and understanding these differences is important.
In simple terms: Therapy is healthcare. Coaching isn’t.
Therapy involves diagnosing and treating mental health concerns and providing clinical treatment. Coaching does not diagnose, treat, or aim to heal mental health conditions or psychological disorders.
Coaching is more focused on where you are now, where you want to go, and working through things like patterns, decisions, boundaries, relationships, goals, or rebuilding.
While therapy often explores past experiences to understand and heal current patterns, coaching primarily focuses on your present situation and future goals. We may acknowledge how past experiences inform current challenges, but we don't process or work through trauma.
Therapy or Coaching?
LET’S MAKE THIS MAKE SENSE.
I work with high achievers, leaders, and people navigating the aftermath of narcissistic abuse in both therapy and coaching. So, what’s the difference?
Therapy is clinical mental health care. It involves assessing and treating mental health concerns, addressing psychological distress, and doing the deeper clinical work of healing from trauma and other experiences affecting your mental health.
Coaching is different. It's a non-clinical, forward-focused partnership centered on personal and professional growth, navigating challenges, making decisions, changing patterns, and building a life or career that feels more aligned with who you are and where you want to go.
COACHING IS NOT THERAPY WITH A DIFFERENT ZIP CODE, MY FRIEND.
It's not therapy without a diagnosis. It's not trauma treatment with a different name. And it's definitely not a workaround for the fact that I'm only able to provide therapy to clients physically located in the state of Pennsylvania.
It's not necessarily what we're talking about. It's why you're seeking support, what you're hoping to accomplish, and the kind of support that’s clinically appropriate.
You might want to talk about narcissistic abuse, shame, relationships, leadership, or the pressure of being a high achiever in either setting—which is okay!
The topic alone doesn't determine which service is appropriate. But the purpose of our work and the interventions needed do.
Below are some real-world examples to help illustrate what the distinction between therapy and coaching can look like.
